Good morning! Today is rainy and gross and it feels like nothing in my life is going right. When that happens, it is a good time to eat good clean food and stay cozy. Enter today’s breakfast: quinoa flakes with carob, a cacao / flaxseed blend and walnuts. Check it:


It’s definitely not the prettiest breakfast I’ve made recently, but it was filling, delightful, and a good warm way to start the day.

If you haven’t had quinoa flakes before, try them out! They’re like oatmeal, kind of, but the quick oats that are small and flaky when you pour them into the bowl. Here’s a nutritional comparison of old fashioned oats and quinoa flakes:


Personally, I like quinoa flakes because they are a seed, not a grain – quinoa is also one of the only foods with all of the essential amino acids, and so is a great way to start the day.

Gluten free, vegan Chocolate Carob Quinoa Flakes

1 cup water or almond milk
1/3 cup quinoa flakes
2 tbsp cacao / flaxseed blend (I ground up raw cacao nibs and flaxseed in my coffee grinder)
1 tbsp carob powder
1 tsp psyllium husk powder
Stevia, to taste (optional)
Toppings of choice

Mix together the dry ingredients, then add water or a milk of your choice and microwave for 1.5-2 minutes.

Top with nuts, cacao nibs, nut butter, whatever you like! I had 1/2 ounce of walnuts and a tablespoon of raw cacao nibs.
